As a huge fan of musicals, and the release of the new Wicked movie, we just had to create the iconic characters Elphaba and Glinda with the Podgekins Patterns! Continue reading to find out more.
Glinda
First up, the Glinda doll! Of course, she had to have a big pink dress which was surprisingly easy to make using the Podgekins dress pattern. Using the dress pattern and cutting at the line for the top version, and then cutting out a circle skirt to create the big volume of the skirt. I folding the fabric into quarters, and then cut out the circle skirt by making sure the hole for the waist was double the measurement of the dress waist. You can use a circle skirt calculated online for this if it's easier, I kind of just winged it and did it by eye!
I gathered and sewed on the laters of the skirt separately, and the lining had less gathering than the tulle so it wouldn't be bulky.
I then used the flutter sleeve piece, and extended the length by 1c, to make the sleeve longer. The tulle layer on the top I made 2cm bigger to give the illusion of a longer puff sleeve. I used the crown pattern template as a reference for the crown, but made the spikes of it taller to look like Glinda crown.
Elphaba
For Elphaba I of course had to make the doll body from a green fabric, and I had this green cotton which is medium weight (roughly 150gsm) which was perfect.
Other than making her in green there wasn't many hacks! The sleeve is from the dungarees pattern, the t-shirt pattern, and it worked really well, I just had to widen the armhole slightly for the dress pattern.
The witches hat is made from black felt, and the hair is made from a curly yarn I picked up as a de stash event!
I made the little broom stick from sticks in the garden, craft wire, and a glue gun.
I'm so happy with how they turned out, there are a few extra touches I want to add to them but for a quick project I'm really pleased.
